Join us for our June 8 meeting: I this, me that

This week’s meeting theme is “I this, me that” and Toastmaster Arvind will explain why “it’s all about me” resonates in our world of the self absorbed.

Our speaking roster runs the gamut for all tastes. Rene will use his organizational techniques to “Paint a Family Portrait”. Vivienne will tackle vocal variety by sharing a “Hairy Tale.” And while we’re on the subject of tales, there’s going to be a moral to the story that Bing will tell us.

Find out what Table Topics Navita will pluck out of her bag of creativity. Come all to our next meeting!

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – May 25

Congratulations to our newly elected executive committee members: Sean, Jay, Julian, Vivienne, Michelle, Ian, Luke, Lily, Eric and Francisco!

For the theme of the day, our resident “love guru” Julian gave us 5 invaluable tips to finding that summer fling love:
1) have a vision,
2) gain strength in numbers,
3) beat the competition,
4) accept, and
5) adapt

Such wise words – tell me more, tell me more! We could only hope for a sequel.

For prepared speeches, Tonia shared with us her experiences camping in the great outdoors. From staying at a lodge with a custom-made sauna room to roughing it portaging – she’s done it all and came back to tell the tale.

In her much anticipated icebreaker, Patty vividly recounted her visit to Washington and her experience inside the Whistler’s Peacock Room.

Finally, in Arvind’s ninth speech, he persuaded us to break our habit of working 9 to 5 and think we’re actually achieving something. If only we could all let go of those peanuts, Arvind.

Wednesday June 1 will be our open house event titled: “Grow as a public speaker!” Be sure to attend and bring along someone special!

Join us for our May 25 meeting: Summer loving

The theme for the meeting this week is summer loving. Our Toastmaster Julian would love to perform a rendition of the classic song from Grease on this very theme (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpJUrt0O7uY) but instead he will offer five invaluable tips in a talk titled ‘From internet dating to millionaire’s family in five short years: How I did it and how you can too (with a little bit of luck)’.

At this meeting we also have 3 prepared speeches. Let’s congratulate Patty and Tonia for stepping up to deliver their ice-breakers and Arvind for moving very close to the finish line with his speech #9, Persuade with power.

Stay tuned for a fun Table Topics session in the 2nd part of our meeting!
See you on Wednesday!

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – May 11

Our May 11th meeting started with the induction of our newest member
Roberto – welcome to the club!

Navita then introduced the theme of the evening – “Simple Sounds”.
She described how she missed hearing the pitter patter of raindrops
tapping her umbrella on her way to work and reminded us of the
wonderfully simple sounds that surround us in spring time.

Onto our first prepared speech of the evening – Arvind stimulated our
sense of smell with a LIVE cooking demonstration of the traditional
Indian rice dish Pulao. Made with basmati rice and a blend of spices,
the fragrance filled the room.

With our senses dazzled by wondrous sounds and smells, Frank persuaded
with power by pointing out numerous shortcomings to the 2011 Census.
He said that it is inconceivable that our government has done such a poor
job administrating the census. And who could argue?!

If anyone has not had a good look at their investment
portfolios lately, our third speaker Eric made a poignant case why real estate is
more precious than metals. The audience was highly engaged and
asked a lot of questions during the Q&A portion of the speech.

Last but not least Michelle got comfortable with visual aids in her
8th speech and tapped into her humours aura tackling the question
“Does size really matter?” In her speech, Michelle explained how the
monstrosity of the Motorola Syntac 8000x trumps every tagline in the
original 1987 movie Wall Street.

We want to thank Luke’s dad for providing him with the material to an
amusing table topics story about getting a good night’s sleep in London.
Congratulations also to Rolando for successfully filling the role of GE for the first time.
Another accomplished meeting everyone. Hope to see you at Wednesday’s meeting!
