Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – May 11

Our May 11th meeting started with the induction of our newest member
Roberto – welcome to the club!

Navita then introduced the theme of the evening – “Simple Sounds”.
She described how she missed hearing the pitter patter of raindrops
tapping her umbrella on her way to work and reminded us of the
wonderfully simple sounds that surround us in spring time.

Onto our first prepared speech of the evening – Arvind stimulated our
sense of smell with a LIVE cooking demonstration of the traditional
Indian rice dish Pulao. Made with basmati rice and a blend of spices,
the fragrance filled the room.

With our senses dazzled by wondrous sounds and smells, Frank persuaded
with power by pointing out numerous shortcomings to the 2011 Census.
He said that it is inconceivable that our government has done such a poor
job administrating the census. And who could argue?!

If anyone has not had a good look at their investment
portfolios lately, our third speaker Eric made a poignant case why real estate is
more precious than metals. The audience was highly engaged and
asked a lot of questions during the Q&A portion of the speech.

Last but not least Michelle got comfortable with visual aids in her
8th speech and tapped into her humours aura tackling the question
“Does size really matter?” In her speech, Michelle explained how the
monstrosity of the Motorola Syntac 8000x trumps every tagline in the
original 1987 movie Wall Street.

We want to thank Luke’s dad for providing him with the material to an
amusing table topics story about getting a good night’s sleep in London.
Congratulations also to Rolando for successfully filling the role of GE for the first time.
Another accomplished meeting everyone. Hope to see you at Wednesday’s meeting!

Join us for our May 18 meeting: 2011 Census

Last Tuesday, May 10th was the Census day. We all received the yellow envelope in our mail and on it reads: “Complete the census – it’s the law”. What does completing the 2011 Census really means? Is it law or rather moral obligation? Come to this Wednesday’s meeting to find out from our Toastmaster Lily why you should complete the 2011 Census and how the information you provide will help build a better country for our future generations.

The agenda looks packed again with no less than 4 prepared speeches in a nice balanced fashion: 2 ice-breakers and 2 speeches #4. Let’s show our support to Rene and Patty who will deliver their first speeches! Tomorrow you will also have an opportunity to observe the “How to say it” part of a speech by listening to Luke and Julian who will both try to communicate their ideas clearly, accurately and vividly.

Stay tuned for a fun Table Topics session facilitated by Michelle!
See you tomorrow at the meeting!

Join us for our May 11 meeting: “Simple sounds”

Today our Toastmaster Navita will challenge us to remember listening the simple sounds around us. Do we really pay attention to the sounds of nature, or we choose to ignore them most of the times by listening to our ipods and mp3 players?

The agenda looks packed like never before with 4 prepared speeches!!! Arvind, Michelle and Frank are all fighting to finalize their Competent Communicator manual before July 1st. Who will be the first one to hit the finish line? Come to the next meetings to find out!
Eric is also moving fast through his Persuasive Speaking advanced manual. Congrats Eric for leading by example as an advanced speaker!

Stay tuned for a fun Table Topics facilitated by Andreea in the 2nd part of our meeting!
See you at the meeting!

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – May 4

Beavers sharing the experienceIt was another packed evening on May 4 that was also filled with enthusiasm. Jay introduced our theme of the day – “Experiences”. An experience to Jay is a special time shared with friends. He related to his experience watching the first ever UFC in Toronto with his friends. Jay urged us to value our experiences no matter how big or small.

Ali kick-started the prepared speeches part of the meeting with his second speech from the Competent Communication manual. It was about how he got this 3rd degree black belt by the age of twelve – a true story. He led us back to his adventurous past when he started training in martial arts at age four. Ali also shared the benefits of his training: self-discipline, self-confidence, and feeling secure.

Luke entertained us with his third speech on the art of traveling lightly. In his personable and conversational tone, Luke showed us the versatile ways to travel with just one carry-on bag, whether we’re traveling for one week or even for an entire month. Citing reliable sources like onebag.com and making strong points on time as well as environmental and economic savings, Luke convinced us to resist the temptation of bringing luggage and to opt for a less taxing travel experience.

Continuing the momentum, we heard our enthusiastic (and often comical) table topic speakers share their points of view. Kudos to our three guests who volunteered to say some speeches during for table topics. We also had four members who took on new roles for the first time – Patty as Grammarian, Lauren as Ah Counter, Francisco as General Evaluator, and Tonia as Time Keeper.

This night was certainly a valuable experience.

Keep up the high energy and don’t miss out on the upcoming meeting
