LV Toastmasters Meeting Summary – October 13

The theme of the October 13 Toastmasters meeting was “Prepared, Unprepared.” Our toastmaster Esther kicked the meeting off by telling us some short anecdotes about how prepared she is. She stressed that it’s important to prepare for the unexpected.

We were treated to hearing speeches from two seasoned speakers from our club. John was the first speaker. His speech was not from our required Toastmaster manuals, so his evaluator Bing had flexibility in evaluating more components of his speech.

John’s speech was titled “The Silence Between Two Thoughts”. It was about broadening one’s perspective. The main focal point of John’s speech was a painting called “La mulata” by Diego Velázquez. John’s eloquent delivery was noticed by all of us. Nice speech John, and great constructive evaluation Bing!

During the speech, John deciphers the meaning behind a painting called “La Mulata” – to view the painting, click here.

Distinguished Toastmaster, Ram followed with a five minute pitch he wanted to present as a candidate seeking to be a member of the Canadian Diabetes Board. Ram will be travelling to Alberta to make this pitch to members across the country from the diabetes community, and last week’s meeting was a great opportunity to practice the pitch. John K was his evaluator and provided Ram with some great tips. We wish Ram good luck!

For the unprepared Table Topics segment, speakers were asked to recall a time they were unprepared and what they did about it. We heard some really interesting and humorous accounts from Arvind, Ram, Andreea and John K. Andreea’s recollection of being unprepared during her high school years garnered the coveted opportunity to touch the stuffed Tiger. Great job!

Overall the night got high praises, especially from our guests, who are more than welcome to visit us again.

Hope to see you at the next meeting!

Michelle

Join us for our October 20th Meeting – “Mentorship, the gift that keeps on giving”

The theme of this week’s meeting is “Mentorship, the gift that keeps on giving”. Mentorship is a personal developmental relationship between two people that helps them maximize their potential. Giving and receiving mentorship has changed lives in remarkable ways. Has mentorship helped you change your life? Are you looking for a great mentor? Do you want to become one? At this meeting, Andreea, our Toastmaster, will challenge you to think about the answers to these questions.

The main attraction of the evening will be the 2 speeches delivered by John and Bing. John has been researching a topic and came up with a very intriguing title, “How to Kill a Vampire”, that we’re all very curious to find out more about. Bing, will try to get personal with us by telling a story. Will she manage to win our hearts? And as usual, you will have an opportunity to brush up on your impromptu speaking skills, in the table topics section. So, what are you waiting for? Come and join us this Wednesday at 6 pm at the Harbourfront Community Centre, for another exciting Toastmasters meeting!

LV Toastmasters Meeting Summary – October 6

The October 6 meeting had a different format. It was in preparation for the area level humorous speech and evaluator competition later in the week. We only focused on the evaluator competition because we didn’t have any representation in the humour category.

For those unfamiliar with this format, in a nutshell we had an evaluation competition target speaker (Kevin Ma) and two evaluators (Ian and Arvind) who evaluated his speech. The evaluators were judged by three competition judges. The winning evaluator would represent our club at the area level competition later in the week.

Special thanks to the participants who volunteered in such short notice. Kevin Ma, one of our new members, did the ice breaker speech. At the conclusion of Kevin’s speech, Ian and Arvind were taken out of our Toastmasters meeting room and given five minutes to thoroughly review his speech and put together their evaluation of his speech. They were brought back to our meeting area one at a time and delivered a 2–3 minute evaluation of Kevin’s speech to us. The competition judges scored and tallied the evaluations.

This was really an educational night. People in attendance got to listen to different evaluation perspectives of the speech and got valuable awareness in constructing great evaluations. The evaluators got the opportunity to hone their evaluation skills and Kevin got more than one person evaluating his speech and enriching his speaking experience. Well done everyone!

Kevin had a really great speech. It was titled “Up in the Air” – he gave us a personal account as to why he flies all the time. This was truly insightful, especially to those of us who watched Kevin win the Table Topics a few weeks ago and he told us that he likes to spend time in hotel lobbies. Now we’ve connected the dots!

Our evaluators Ian and Arvind provided us with great evaluations. Well thought out, nicely articulated and fantastic suggestions too! Ian won the contest, but due to prior commitments, Arvind represented our club at the area level competition later in the week.

Arvind did a stellar job as evaluator. He’s one of our newer members and stepped up to address an exceptional first time evaluation. If you read Eric’s earlier message, you’ll recall that a cool and composed Arvind did an outstanding job at the area level contest.

Congratulations Arvind on a job well done!

See you at the next meeting!

This week: add a little humour, and a lot of fun!

Comedy!

At this week’s Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting, we will be holding our “Humorous Speech Contest” AND our “Speech Evaluation Contest,” both of which promise to test the mettle of our members. Come and join us as a guest and watch as our contestants are faced with two of the most challenging aspects of public-speaking: making people laugh and giving a thoughtful and constructive evaluation.

The fun doesn’t stop there, however: on the very next night (Thursday, Oct. 7th), the winner of our Humorous Speech Contest will participate in a special contest against members from other Toastmasters clubs from area. The Simcoe Speakers Toastmasters Club will be hosting the Area 23 “Table Topics & Humorous Speech Contest,” an event that always attracts a large crowd. Join us at the venue at 200 Front St. West, 9th Floor, Room D, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. The admission is free, and includes pizza and refreshments.

***If you plan on attending this Area 23 Event, please RSVP with richard_tyrrell@wsib.on.ca and br_hunt@hotmail.com. To view the event poster as a .PDF, click here.
