Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – April 20

Julian took on the role as Toastmater for the first time at our April 20 meeting. The evening’s theme was “creative destruction”. Working on his home renovation project reminded Julian that it was similar to developing a good speech. Home renovation requires tearing down old parts of the house and replacing them with better updated parts. Similarly, developing a good quality speech can result in tearing the speech apart and tapping into creativity to build it into something newer and more interesting.

We heard three speeches during the prepared speech segment of the meeting.

Rolando gave his first speech from the “Competent Communication Manual”. He spoke about coming to Canada from the Philippines, touched on a few of his hobbies and spoke passionately about his career as an accountant.

Next we saw a very serious side of Francisco, who provided facts and anecdotes in his third speech about internet safety.

Finally, Arvind delivered his sixth speech. The memorable title “Boom, boom, boom” was a clear, distinct and strong reminder that he was doing a speech on vocal variety.

We didn’t have Table Topics. Instead, Ram did a wonderful workshop on evaluating speeches – a crucial role in all our Toastmaster meetings and an important element that helps us develop as better speakers. Ram cautioned that when evaluating our peers, we don’t want to take a page out of Simon Cowell’s book and be labelled as mean spirited and low. On the other hand, we don’t want to come across as weepy and soft like J. Lo either. Effective evaluation means we can give constructive criticism that speakers can take away to improve and apply to their professional growth. Ram focused on some great techniques and gave us a handy reference too. This workshop generated a lot of questions from the audience. Job well done Ram!

Another great meeting folks!

Until next time!

Join us for our Apr.20 meeting: “Creative destruction”

This week’s meeting looks very promising: Julian will kick-off the meeting by talking about „Creative destruction”, Ram will conduct the „Evaluate to motivate” workshop, and 3 amazing speakers are waiting to impress us with their newly acquired speaking skills!

„Creative destruction” is the theme for our meeting this week. What is the relationship between creativity and destruction? Are they opposites or two sides of the same coin? Are our destructive instincts always bad, or are they an essential part of the creative process of renewal and rebirth? This week, our Toastmaster Julian will talk about creative destruction in the process of preparing and presenting a speech, drawing parallels with his recent experience as a home demolition laborer.

The agenda is packed with 3 prepared speeches: Rolando will deliver his 1st speech, thus marking the beginning of his journey into the CC program, Arvind will use his vocal variety to impress us with his 6th speech and Jay will inaugurate the „Speaking to inform” manual with his 1st speech.

Last but not least, stay tuned for the „Evaluate to motivate” workshop to learn from Ram how to sharpen our evaluation skills! Looking forward to seeing you all at the meeting!

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – April 13

consistency consistency consistency tshirtJay was our Toastmaster at the April 13 meeting. He reminded us through the evening’s theme “consistency” that we need to be consistent if we want to be good at something. He also encouraged us to push ourselves to achieve our goals by focusing on the positive things.

We heard three prepared speeches from our diverse pool of Toastmasters talent.

Luke was the first speaker who presented from “Competent Communication 2” by explaining how deal-of-the-day websites like Groupon originated and the pros and cons attached to them.

Second speaker Eric used “Persuasive Speaking 3” to demonstrate a step-by-step way to persuade his work colleagues to buy a new software.

Finally, Simon flexed his dramatic chops when he dug deep into “Interpretive Reading 4” to present to us three different characters from the play “The Chocolate Affair”.

Table Topics Master Cleaver tied the theme of “consistency” to Table Topics quite well. Each speaker was given a pro or con quote about consistency and provided us with their interpretation of the quote. Winner Julian wowed us with his entertaining perspective of Jim Dale’s quote “Good acting is consistency of performance”.

Overall the meeting was really energized. Congratulations to Grammarian Lily’s word of the day, “haste”, which was mentioned a record 19 times! Future meeting Grammarians the gauntlet has been thrown down!

Until next time!

Join us for our Apr.13 meeting: “Consistency”

“Consistency. Not only is this this week’s theme but it has been a theme in my life for the past few years. It is what made the tortoise win the race. You may not be the biggest, fastest, or most talented, but if you are consistent – you will get to where you want to go.” – Jay

Join us at this week’s Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting on Wed. April 13 at the Harbourfront Community Centre, Assembly Room C. Our Toastmaster, Jay, will give us all a lesson on “Consistency”.

We also have three prepared speeches: Luke will present his well-organized sophomore speech, Eric will teach us about putting together a winning proposal, and Simon will be summoning the inner-actor inside of himself with an interpretive reading.

Don’t miss it!
