Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – March 9

The creative juices were overflowing at our March 9 meeting!

Toastmaster Jay connected the dots about the evening’s “Connection” theme. Think about it – each day we connect with people, but we tend to gravitate towards certain people more than others. These people become our friends, mentors or career network. We may even find a significant other through this sort of connection. Jay also reflected on his personal experience and the people who made lasting connections with him.

The evening’s speaking roster featured four diverse people. First, we got acquainted with new member Michael quite well when he presented his Icebreaker. He spoke with pride and passion about the humble beginnings of his family, his entrepreneurial edge and his desire to continue learning and growing.

Next, our other newbie, Francisco captured his life as a cinematic experience filled with drama, comedy, adventure and romance. It was a ‘feel good’ speech that was worth two enthusiastic thumbs up!

Third speaker Vivienne’s body language spoke volumes when she presented from the Competent Communicator Manual Five. We vicariously understood what it was like to swim with the dolphins. From plunging into the cold water, to the exhilaration of experiencing these beautiful creatures up front and close and understanding why not to touch them!

Finally, Frank’s Competent Communicator Manual Eight speech paid homage to recently departed Liberty Village legend, John K. Frank reminded us that John K. had the enviable skill to pull a Seinfeld moment and prepare a dynamic speech about the simplest topic. In grand John K style, Frank’s speech was about house plants. Through the use of visual aids, he even personalized his plants and presented the ‘team’ – Biggie, Spike, Rose, Red and poor Basil. Great job Frank! John K would be very proud of you!

Congratulations to Lily who spoke from her heart and won our hearts and the most votes at Table Topics when she was asked about an experience connecting with someone she lost touch with for years. Nice touch!

Overall, the meeting was well attended and the engagement level was great too! Nice work everyone!

Speaking of engaging, don’t forget to attend our area level contest on March 15 at 55 John Street South. Come and give your support to our club representatives John and Cleaver!

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for information on our next meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you at these events!

Join us for our March 9 meeting: “Connections”

We all connect with people every day, but with some people we maintain the connection. Why? Is it because we want something from them? Are they a good contact for our career? Do we just click with them? Do we just enjoy their company? Why do we make the connections we do, and how does that affect our lives? Come to this week’s meeting to see our Toastmasters Jay unveiling some of the answers to these questions.

This week we have 4 speakers who are ready to kick ass tonight! Two of them are at their 1st speech! Michael and Francisco are the ones who will break the ice, followed by Vivienne who will take us to an aquatic journey and Frank who will hypnotize us with visual aids. Last but not least we will have a fun table topics section prepared by Hazel. Come to be part of another exhilarating experience at the Liberty Village Toastmasters! See you at the meeting!

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – March 2

Ultimate Fighting Championship superstar Georges St-Pierre (GSP) wasn’t always on top of his game. When he lost his title, he focused on ways to improve himself and stay on the right track to win back his title. Toastmaster Bing told us that as Toastmasters, we need to take time to focus and stay on track to achieve our goals and win our personal titles.

We had a joint meeting with the Go-Getters Toastmasters club. The prepared speech component of the meeting featured only one person – Eddie of the Go-Getters. His speech was from the Competent Communication Manual – 4. It was about whistleblowers. He took us on a well crafted journey on the importance of whistleblowing. It was peppered with real life situations and a thought provoking conclusion.

The popular Table Talks segment was elevated to a new level at our March 2 meeting. There was a debate on whether fighting sport should be banned. Overall twelve Table Topics speakers were divided into two groups of six. One team represented the “yes” side, and other group represented the “no” side.

The debate format proved to be a great way for speakers to interact effectively with others on their team. Before the debate, the teams were given time to go over their talking points. They took full advantage of this and collaborated seamlessly– very nice for people who mostly did not know each other well. There was a great mixture of volunteers from Liberty Village. The Go-Getters also had great representation, and a couple of our guests volunteered to debate too.

Spectators agreed it was a WOW (War of the Words) moment. Both sides launched strong attacks on their opponents. When we thought one group eloquently pummeled the other group, the other group counter-attacked with another hook. It was primetime entertainment at its best. The debate went back and forth like a great dramatic performance. In the end the group that felt fighting sports should be banned prevailed. Overall everyone did an exceptional job! Congratulations all!

The evening went by really quickly, and that’s due to everyone’s enthusiasm and passion. Looking forward to the next meeting which will be our regular format Toastmaster meeting.

Join us for our Mar. 2 meeting: UFC – Lessons for Toastmasters

UFC – The Ultimate Fighting Championship – is a sport that has spread like wildfire and become one of the hottest sensations among males and females alike. People are buzzing about it. They’re taking mixed martial arts because of it. They’re paying big bucks to watch it. They’ve lobbied the province to legalize it (and won). But what can we, as Toastmasters, really learn from the sport?

Join us for our Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting this Wednesday, Mar. 2 at the Harbourfront Community Centre as our Toastmaster, Bing, attempts to knock us out with her theme for the evening: “Ultimate Fighting Championship – Lessons for Toastmasters”.

Mar. 2 will be a special joint meeting with another local Toastmasters club, The Go-Getters. As a result, we’ll be treated to prepared speeches by a member from each of our clubs: Eddie from the Go-Getters and LVTM’s very own Frank. We’ll also be having a very rare “debate-style” Table Topics session, in which participants will go toe-to-toe in the Table Topics ring to argue in favour of a particular point-of-view. It’s going to be one heck of a fight night – don’t miss it!

(**Please note that in order to accommodate the members from both of our clubs, this meeting will be held in the large Assembly Room located just past the main office, and not in our usual meeting room).

See you there!
