Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – March 23

Our word of the day was “unorthodox” and it succinctly described the type of meeting we had. Toastmaster John brought context to the “un-meeting” theme by explaining it’s ok to break rules when coming up with ideas. For example, Porter Airlines broke away from traditional airlines advertising by positioning itself in an unconventional way that made it distinct from its competition. John indicated that speeches can break conventions too and still be memorable and impactful.

We heard three prepared speeches with unconventional elements and John invited us to listen to them without prejudice and vote for the best “un-speech”. The winner would be awarded a prize.

Lily was the first speaker of the night. She enlightened us about the Robocop Campaign that helped elevate Detroit’s image.

Second speaker Francisco revisited the themes of his “ice breaker” speech with a different slant.

Finally, our last speaker Julian relived the nightmarish ordeal he endured buying a house from a unique seller and the challenging circumstances that followed.

Francisco got the most votes and won the prize.

Instead of Table Topics, we had an exceptional workshop on procrastination led by Ian. He covered why people procrastinate and gave us some great tips, including how he tries to overcome procrastination. We were thoroughly engaged and a lot of questions were asked.

Overall the word of the day was used six times – a club record for the most times the word of the day has been used. The “un-meeting” was quite successful.

Special mention goes out to Hazel, a true Toastmaster who epitomizes the art of time management and perfect delivery. After delivering her speech on March 16, she delivered a healthy baby boy three days later on March 19! Congratulations from all of us!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting!

Join us on March 23 for the “Un-Meeting”

As Toastmasters, we’re constantly striving to learn and master the key tenets and elements of public speaking. These tenets, however, can sometimes hold us back – especially when they become conventions. From time to time, it pays to expand beyond what’s expected and break a rule (or two) in order to deliver a speech that’s different, memorable, and unconventional… an “Un-Speech”!!

Join us for our Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting this Wed. March 23 at the Harbourfront Community Centre, Assembly Room C. Our Toastmaster, John, will present the theme for the evening: the “Un-Meeting”. Each of our prepared speakers – Lily, Francisco, and Julian – will be challenged to break at least one Toastmasters convention during each of their speeches. The audience will then vote on the best “Un-Speech” – and the winning speaker will receive a special “Un-Prize” (worth $30)…

In addition, we have a special “Un-Workshop” on Procrastination, facilitated by one of our long-standing Advanced Speakers, Ian. We’ll be taken through the current thinking on the causes of procrastination, as well as some recommended ways to overcome it.

Don’t procrastinate – make sure you drop by our meeting this Wednesday!

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – March 16

The theme of our March 16 meeting was “My Japanese Experience”. Toastmaster Esther enlightened us about the Japanese culture. Did you know that the Japanese do not talk on their cell phones in a public places like the public transit? Imagine what it would be like if people here did the same thing!

We had three prepared speeches. Ali was our first speaker. He CRUSHED the ice and completely captivated us when he told us about his journey from Iran. The natural flow of his narrative was really powerful!

Our second speaker, Hazel presented from the Competent Communication Manual 4 about her love for skiing. She vividly recreated what it was like to go skiing, which was really great for those in the audience who don’t ski.

Finally, Eric presented from the Advanced Speaking Manual. With the assistance of Sean in a supporting role, Eric provided a mini workshop about how to close a deal. Titled “Maple Syrup is Sweeter than Vinegar”, Eric did a great job breaking down the material he was going to present to us.

Fresh off of her flight from Japan the night before, former club member Millie won table topics. Her topic tied into our theme of Japan. When asked about experiencing no internet service, she recounted what it was like days prior in Japan when the internet service was not constant. We learned so much about the situation in Japan through her perspective – really sad and quite scary too. On the other hand, we’re glad Millie is back safe and sound and marvel that she was able to defy jet lag, attend our Toastmasters meeting and win table topics. Great job!

Once again, the evening was packed with some delightfully entertaining material.. Looking forward to hearing the topics that will be presented at our next meeting.

See you then!

Michelle
