Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – January 19

Our January 19 Toastmasters meeting was chock-full of fun and information. Toastmaster Vivienne told us about the inspirational “3 A’s of Awesome”. The concept was developed by a blogger, who during the darkest time in his life, dug deep to come up with ways to see life’s wonderful moments through attitude, awareness and authenticity. The attitude is how you take on life’s challenges. Through awareness you should embrace your inner child and remember how you saw things for the first time. Finally, be authentic with what you love the most – just like the hulking football player Roosevelt “Rosey” Grier did when he was true to himself and followed his heart and pursued needlepoint.
Simon was the only speaker of the night. He did a really great job with his interpretive reading of a poignant scene from “The Sweet Hereafter” in which a lawyer travelling on a plane recalls a terrifying childhood moment of his drug addicted daughter when he had to save her from a spider bite. Kudos to Lily for playing the supportive role of the fellow passenger. Simon recited his part expressing to us the fear and discomfort of a parent forced to perform emergency tracheotomy on his own child. You could certainly hear a needle drop when he made this passionate delivery. Well done Simon!

The second half of the meeting was a workshop on the ingredients to developing a great speech. This version of Liberty Village style TED Talks, was led by our Advanced Speaker Ted, and it did not disappoint. We had a great turn out — close to a dozen new guests, in addition to our members. Everyone agreed the workshop was worthwhile. A lot of people took copious notes and some of our guests admitted they learned a lot from the workshop. Great presentation Ted! We’re looking forward to more high calibre workshops.

The meeting concluded with the reports from our General Evaluator Kevin and his team. Despite a slightly longer meeting, there was an overwhelming sentiment that it was an outstanding meeting.
Looking forward to the next meeting

Join us for our Jan. 26 Meeting: “The Seconds That Matter”

In this “Too-Much-Information” Age, audiences have become much more selective and demanding when it comes to the messages with which they choose to engage. According to a recent advertising study, the window of opportunity within which consumers will decide whether a brand’s message matters to them or not is an extremely tight average of 6.5 seconds. What does this unnerving number mean to you, as a public speaker? You only have 6.5 seconds to make your speech count – use them wisely…

Join us at our next Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting this Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 6pm. Our Toastmaster, John K, will share with us the theme for the evening – “The Seconds That Matter” – which will include a special, surprise “challenge” for the club’s members. What will it be? You’ll have to attend to find out…

The night will include a full line-up of prepared speeches, from members old and new, who are ready to take more than a few seconds to speak about topics that matter to them. But don’t fret, Table Topics will also be making a triumphant return this week, so even if you don’t have a role, you’ll get the opportunity to have your 6.5 seconds in the spotlight.

See you Wednesday!

Join us for our Jan. 12 meeting: “Blasting Through the Winter Blues”

After a long holiday of gluttonous indulgence, shameless consumerism, and joyful celebrations, the cold hard reality of January finally hits: you have a few extra pounds to lose, the credit card bills are mounting, and zero holidays or festivities to look forward to in the near future.

It is a difficult time for all of us. We need a ray of light to blast through the winter gloom. The theme for tomorrow’s meeting, hosted by our Toastmaster, Bing, is “Blasting through the Winter Blues.” Everyone is encouraged to come to the meeting prepared with a suggestion / tip on a small piece of paper to share with everyone else on how you survived the winter gloom. All the suggestions will be read throughout the meeting.

It will also be an exciting time for many of our new members. Julian, along with our newest member, Keith, will be giving their Ice Breaker speeches. Vivienne will Get to the Point with her third speech, “Give yourself a competitive edge: How to market yourself as a brand.” Finally, Arvind will strive to use body language to enhance his fifth speech. In addition to the prepared speeches, we also have several votes that will be held – members, do your best to attend.

See you there!
