Get Ready for the Red Carpet…

The flash of a hundred cameras snapping all at once blinds you as you suavely step out of your limousine… Immediately you’re pulled aside by a perky, fair-haired young interviewer who compliments you on your attire (“Who are you wearing?” she shouts with glee)… Your fans push up against the velvet rope, fighting to get closer, yearning for your autograph, just waiting to tell you, “I loved you in your last speech!!” This is it. You’ve finally arrived… It’s the Academy Awards!!!

Liberty Village Toastmasters presents the 1st Annual Academy Awards: Dinner & Ceremony. On one night only, Friday December 17th at 7pm, the members and guests of Liberty Village Toastmasters will walk the red carpet to the Supermarket Restaurant & Bar. Wear your sharpest suit and your most glamorous dress. Enjoy a dinner featuring Asian-inspired tapas plates. Watch with anticipation as the nominees learn who among them will walk away with an “Academy Award.” Then sit back and enjoy a very special “After Dinner” speech. And just like the real Oscars – expect an after party and a jam-packed dance floor.

Members $20, Guests $25 (payment in advance, by cash or cheque). RSVP to libertyvillage.tm@gmail.com by December 1st.

Join us for our Nov. 24 meeting: “Keeping in Contact”

“Keeping in contact.” That’s the big conundrum, isn’t it? Why should you spend the time and effort that’s required to maintain and expand your network of contacts? The answer is simple: whether they be friends, acquaintances, business contacts, or even fellow Toastmasters, you never know when you’re going to need their help!

Join us at our next Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting this Wednesday, November 24 at 6pm. Sean, our VP Education and Toastmaster for the evening, will give us a talk about the benefits of “keeping in contact.” In addition, we’ll be hearing three prepared speeches. Hazel will finally be stepping up to the podium when she presents her Ice Breaker, Frank will share an well-informed speech for Research Your Topic, and Eric will be taking the practice of researching to the next level with his Advanced Speech.

In the second half of the meeting, Priya, our VP Membership, will lead our first ever Workshop on Mentoring. As we launch our newly-rejuvenated Mentorship Program, members will have the opportunity to sit with their mentors to briefly talk about their goals within Toastmasters and what they are hoping to learn or be guided on as they work to become better public speakers.

Members – really try your best to make it out, as this will be an interactive workshop that can help set a course for your personal development at Liberty Village Toastmasters!

Join us for our Nov. 17 meeting: “Aroma”

Take a moment and think about the powerful scent that billows up to your nose from a steaming-hot cup of finely-ground coffee every morning. What about the invigorating smell of sitting in a brand new car? Now think about this: how much do we really appreciate the power of aroma?

Join us at our next Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting this Wednesday, November 17 at 6pm. Our Toastmaster for the evening, John Kj., will speak about how important smells are to us and how we often ignore them.

In addition, we have a great line-up of four speakers. First up is one of our newest members, Lily, who will be formally introducing herself to the club with her Ice Breaker. Next will be Bill, who’ll try his best to Get to the Point, and then Navita, who will no doubt have some interesting words to share with us on her recent trip to Spain. Capping it all off will be one of our most Advanced Speakers, Valerie.

All in all, it’s smelling like a great meeting. Be sure to join us – and don’t forget to invite a friend!

Nov. 3 Open House Event Meeting Summary

Our Open House was a full house. With well over 40 people in attendance, there were a lot of new faces in the audience. Priya, our Toastmaster made everyone feel at ease by providing a step by step account of what to expect at typical Toastmasters meeting. General Evaluator Ted introduced his evaluation team who familiarized new people the function of their roles.

The theme of the evening was “Conquer your fear”. Our first speaker, Eric delivered a speech from The Entertaining Speaker – 5 – Speaking After Dinner. Eric was candid about the first time he raced his bike, purchased a home and engaged in rock climbing. A lot of people were able to relate to his speech.

Ram provided food for thought when he made the statement “your handicap may be your best asset”. He told the inspirational story of Byron, whose experience with Toastmasters helped him in life. Those looking for innovative ways to develop their speeches will be interested to learn that Ram’s speech was inspired by a story in the October issue of Toastmaster. Great use of available resources Ram!

The evening’s workshop was led by Jay. We were introduced to Jay’s doppelganger, who was painfully nervous about speaking in front of a large audience, and apologized profusely about his mistakes and slinked back to his chair due to severe stage fright. A lot of us recognize his behaviour in ourselves. A few minutes later, a confident Jay strode to the podium and entertained us with a personal account of his public speaking disasters. He credits Toastmaster for helping his public speaking skills. He also gave us some really valuable tips on how we can get over our fear of public speaking. Thanks Jay!

In a tribute to the popular game broken telephone, Table Topics Master, Andreea started narrating a story and invited Table Topics speakers to continue the story where she left off and passed it on to the next person to continue their story. Special recognition goes to Bing for creating a short succinct narrative quickly on her feet.

Overall the meeting got rave reviews from our guests. Congratulations to all members who helped make this event a success. We hope to see many of the new faces at future meetings. Guests can come as often as they like.

See you next time,

-Michelle
