Labour day’s Resolution- August 31 Meeting Recap

Happy Labour day! Time to review, refocus and revitalize. Toastmaster Maria encouraged us to get back on track and finish the fourth quarter with pride.

This message was echoed throughout the meeting.

We had 3 speakers, each with a memorable story and message. Cara shared her experience with living in three cities.  After exploring the natural beauty of New Jersey, harsh winters of Chicago and the fast pace of New York, she realized that home is where the heart is at.

Olga discussed ways to replace our common bad habits such as overeating and smoking, which we are sure all of us are guilty of.  And Luke, inspired us to get out our comfort zone just like what he did with his 10 km challenge. He reinforced the message: get started, keep at it, and finish strong!

Finally, Dave held a fun tabletopics session with various topics. In the end, we were impressed by two members: Maria with her contradicting feelings for diamond and Bob’s confident in Ogopogo over Sasquatch. Congrats Maria and Bob!

Next meeting, Bob is our toastmaster.
Theme: The Law of Retaliation
3 speakers: Dave (his Icebreaker!), Stanley, and Andrew

The Power of Music – August 24 Meeting Recap

Toastmaster Andrew led a meeting of rituals. First we bowed to the power of music, then followed the official contest rules with tabletopics.

From Bob, we learned that sometimes we unintentionally create a barrier between ourselves and our goals by physically hiding behind objects. So don’t hide behind the lectern, step forward, open up, and opportunities will come!

Congrats to Luke for his awesome tabletopics speech! He came up on top from at least 10 contestants. Definitely awe-inspiring! Let’s all bow to him as well.

Next meeting, Maria will be our toastmaster.

Speakers: Cara (her ice breaker!), Olga and Luke.

IDK – August 3 Meeting Recap

Knowing is only half the battle. We learned from Toastmaster James that we only become competent when we start applying what we know. It takes discipline at first, but it will eventually become automatic, which is when we become unconsciously competent, in other words….talented!

Insights continue with our next two speakers. First, speaker Arash shared us a story of boy name Johnny with a hidden talent. Johnny’s beat boxing talent was only revealed with Arash’s encouragement. The story demonstrated that no matter how small our action or at what level, we have the power to influence others.

Then Speaker Bob taught us a technique that we can use to be remembered – the serial position effect. Be the first or the last, but not in between. Perhaps that explains many of our life mysteries, like first impression and the middle child syndrome?

Finally, our meeting ended with Laksman leading a thought provoking tabletopics session. Congrats Roger for winning again! Was it because of his talent or serial position effect? Or both? We’ll find out next time.

In summary, lessons learned at this meeting: become talented, get noticed and influence others!

Next meeting, Wes is our toastmaster and Karoline will be speaking.

Developing The Right Habits – July 27 Meeting Recap

Toastmaster Be shared her recent challenges with developing two habits, swearing and punctuality. The two go together at her new office, but she wishes only to choose one to adopt- swearing. I mean ** punctuality of course. Lakshman surprised us by volunteering to do his third speech. He was certainly being truthful to himself. Such words of wisdom!

Wes, our VP of Education held our hands through the yellow brick road, the toastmaster’s journey. He encouraged us to choose a date. It doesn’t matter where you are at on the path, decide on your date so we can be off to become leaders, and see this wizards of ours.

Using Be’s junk from her office, she managed to get us to thinking. John with his magic blue cloth and phrase, instantly magnetized us and ultimately won the table topics. Congrats John! Next time, when you want to connect with anyone, use his secret phrase.

Also, congrats Sol for becoming our new member!

Next meeting, we will continue to develop the right habits, sharpening our skills and igniting our enthusiasm!

James will be our toastmaster, and Cristina, Arash and Bob will be  speaking.
