How many potatoes can you juggle?
In his first Toastmaster’s speech, Luke gave us some personal insight and wisdom about what its like working in a large manufacturing and engineering corporation. Who knew a children’s game like “hot potato” would relate so well to a feeling Luke finds at work. Well done Luke.
We had a great night of firsts, with two of our new members giving their Ice-Breaker speeches!
First, Stanley began by telling us how he stepped out of his shell in University, when he got some random adrenaline and became his debate team captain! And who knew, eventually leading their team to become debate champions and earning himself the best debater award!
Next we had a wonderfully personal and touching account from Olga. She spoke about her distaste for education growing up in Eastern Europe. And her personal saga culminated in getting a degree in honours by the time her tale was over.
Mark also lead our Table Topics portion of the evening, resulting in a 4 way tie for the win. With one last vote, our winner was our guest Roger!

Under the holy tree (the tree that started the music garden), we held our meeting…
Our wise Toastmaster Jay reminded us to be grateful and appreciate what we have. Speaker Luke taught how to handle impromptu by comparing it to an imaginary curve ball; the trick is to go with the flow! And speaker Bob, shared his first time evaluator experience. The story was entertaining and has a moral. His lesson: it doesn’t matter where you started, focus on your strengths, even if it is only one, and build on it.
Finally, congrats to Nadia for winning Table Topics! She told us how wonderful Toronto is, even after living in Dubai and Vancouver.
Next meeting, we will be back at our regular location (Harbourfront Centre, 627 Queens Quay).

Get ready for a breath of fresh air….
This week’s meeting will be held outdoors along the waterfront! Experience Toastmasters amid the unique sights and sounds of the harbour — airplanes, seagulls, party boats and more.
Location:
Waterfront Amphitheatre, located mid-way along the waterfront trail between Spadina and Bathurst, overlooking the water in front of the Music Garden.

Directions:
From Spadina and Queens Quay West, head west along the water until you find the ramp leading down to the theatre space.
From Bathurst and Queens Quay West, head east along the water.
There are also stairs and a wide path leading from the Martin Goodman bike trail on Queens Quay West directly towards the theatre space.

Accessibility:
The lower theatre space can be accessed via a ramp on the west side.
BYOP: Bring your own pens and paper!
This meeting will also be, for the most part, paperless. If you have a role, please bring your own pen and paper, and a surface for writing notes.
See you at the water!

How often do you check in on your progress?
Our Toastmaster Mark encouraged us to do away with Jan 1st resolutions and instead hold July 1st mid-year reviews. Which is also a good time to shake off the Deochi (“evil eye”), a Romanian superstition vividly described by Cristina, and hold a Christmas in July-themed get together, pitched to us by Karoline. Finally, Be took us back to her homeland of Vietnam with the inspiring tale of a fisherman who never gave up!
Congrats to LVTM alumni and former president René for winning a pitch-themed Table Topics.
