Toastmasters has gone a long way since its first establishment in 1924. It now has more than 154,000 clubs around the world with over 332,000 members!

Vietnam’s International Toastmasters Conference October 2016

Jay, one of our dedicated toastmasters, took these pictures while participating at Vietnam’s first International Toastmasters conference this year. Contestants and officials came from Canada and different parts of South Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines).

First time Toastmaster Dave taught us to how to use visualization, a technique he learned from his Dale Carnegie’s class, to flourish our conversations.  Now we will be able to connect with anyone!

We had 2 speakers and 3 sets of debates.
Speaker Louise Bark addressed the safety issue of wheelchairs on public transit. She gave effective ideas on how the city can improve and implement, which we should advocate as it affects us one way or another (e.g. strollers).
Speaker John Kjarsgaard  told us how light came to our world. All thanks to that raven!

Our debates were centered on things we cannot live without: social media, money and detention. Be was voted as best debater for her case against detention.

Next week, we’ll have 3 speakers (Louise Guo, Jill and Maria) with Bob as our toastmaster!

Last night’s meeting was better than watching the Jays lose.

Our Toastmaster Be gave us a speech about something great…not worrying so much! Be gave a compelling argument as to why we should all not worry so much, because only 8% of any of our worries ever come true, and they are usually the kind we can manage.

We had an ice breaker speech tonight by new member Lydia. She shared with us her secret of being both a procrastinator and being spontaneous. She demonstrated lots of strong speaking skills she already has. Great first speech Lydia!

Next we had Bob give us an advanced speech about a quick reference to speaking better french with the ‘four luck’ rule.

And with a really fun table topics session where every single person participated, the winner was declared by majority victory to Mark.

With such a fun evening, why would you ever not want to be here!

This meeting was full of insights.

Toastmaster James kicked it off by describing his recent experience with meeting the man with the hero burger. To James’s surprise, the man is a speaking coach and an author of Amazon Canada’s best selling book. But James wouldn’t have known if he didn’t take the leap to introduce himself. The message: opportunity is nearby, we just need to take the initiative to greet it.

We inducted our newest member, Louise Guo! Her enthusiasm and smile are just one of the many reasons why we are excited to have her as part of our team.

Speaker Louise Bark shared us her childhood experience, which was full of insurmountable difficulties. How she transcended beyond her circumstances and changed her life is truly inspirational. Now she is on mission to help others through her volunteering services to 5 organizations. What an admirable courage and spirit!

Speaker Olga gave us tips in surviving power outages, which included carrying cash, flashlight, buckets of water, and a can opening. Practical and common sense approaches, but we all seem to forget in times of panic so prepare ahead.

To keep current with our times, we also had debates! It was a very close match between Mireille versus Louise Guo and Luke versus Dave. Topics included free post secondary education and reading versus writing the English language

Of course, we ended with our traditional fun table topics. Winner was Jose, our guest who declared that opportunity is not luck, but all preparation! How else could he have been one of the only 10 percent who passed all his CMA exams in one shot?

Next meeting, we will explore new opportunities to learn and develop so be prepared for it.
