Year in Review — June 22 Meeting Recap

How often do you check in on your progress?

Our Toastmaster Mark encouraged us to do away with Jan 1st resolutions and instead hold July 1st mid-year reviews. Which is also a good time to shake off the Deochi (“evil eye”), a Romanian superstition vividly described by Cristina, and hold a Christmas in July-themed get together, pitched to us by Karoline. Finally, Be took us back to her homeland of Vietnam with the inspiring tale of a fisherman who never gave up!

Congrats to LVTM alumni and former president René for winning a pitch-themed Table Topics.

Amsterdam Brewhouse, 245 Queens Quay West

It will be a night of food, drinks, and celebration! Be there for the presentation of awards (‘Toastmaster of the Year’, ‘Most Improved’, and more), toast the new Executive Team, meet LVTM alumni and members from other clubs, drink and be merry!

Arrive at 7pm to get your spot. Guests are welcome!

THIS WED…
We’ll be holding a special outdoor meeting in the Music Garden (right next to our usual venue). Exact location will be announced on Tuesday.

Toast! — June 15 Meeting Recap

It was a night of toasts!

For good reason, of course, because two of our longest-serving members completed a major milestone in their Toastmasters journey: completing their 10th and final Competent Communicator speech! 🙂

After our Toastmaster James led a toast to the members of honour, we got to see them in action. Mohammed gave us a heartfelt speech on the trials and treasures of parenthood, bringing some of us to tears. Mark then gave his best TED Talk pitch on how we should all take risks to achieve ‘Mark’s Meaning of Life’. Our guest Lalo then took a toast-filled Table Topics hosted by Cristina.

Get outside of your comfort zone! — June 8 Meeting Recap

Want to feel more confident and creative?

Reaching outside of your comfort zone will help get you there, according to our Toastmaster Maria. In her Icebreaker Speech, Jill shared three important lessons she learned this year. Bob told a story of the richest man who put his treasures toward the betterment of the society, and Andrew shared a humorous air travel tale of lost baggage and his unsuccessful (but hugely entertaining) attempts to claim it.

Congrats to Arash who won Table Topics with the account of his misfortunes using a popular dating app.

James will be our Toastmaster, and we’ll hear speeches from Mohammed and Mark (both CC #10!!!).

Elections! — June 1 Meeting Recap

Elections!

After our Toastmaster John inspired us to step up and make an impact with the story of his eventful 5th year in high school, the night only got better. Arash encouraged us to build the right support network and follow our (YouTube!) dreams, while Karoline rallied us with her own personal ‘step-up’ story. Finally, Maria led an election pitch Table Topics, won by our guest Kate!

And of course, the 2016/17 Executive Team was elected! These inspired members will lead Liberty Village Toastmasters over the next year:

Body Language — May 25 Meeting Recap

What do your palms say about you?

Our Toastmaster Jordan nailed the theme of body language, and how thousands of years of evolution have made it the number one way to communicate. Silvio gave us a step-by-step guide to being successful in our job hunt, before Jordan returned with a TED-Talk-style presentation on using our palms. Arash won Table Topics (palms down!) with his speech on improving the city.
