Waste Not, Want Not — September 16 Meeting Recap

Have you ever bought something you later regretted?

In this first meeting of the fall season, Toastmaster Mark encouraged us to “Waste Not, Want Not” by giving us three good tips on how to prevent buying what you don’t need. Guest Nikita from District 86 stepped in as Grammarian, providing a word related to the theme (reusable), before Maxim inspired us to make our dreams reality by outlining three steps for each of our goals: plan it, time it, and pay for it.

Next, Andrew entertained us with his interpretation of a scene from Death of a Salesman, while Guest Speaker Preet presented a thorough comparison of big companies (IBM and RBC) and start ups (Uber). Finally, Des led a diverse set of one-word Table Topics, with topics ranging from diamonds to computers to imagination. Mark came away as the big winner with his speech against smoking.

Next week, our Area Governor will be visiting us (and giving a guest speech). Come out and join us!

Regain momentum while LVTM takes a vacation!

TM Vacation

Now that the summer months are over, it’s Toastmasters’ turn to take a vacation. Just a reminder that Liberty Village Toastmasters will be closed this September 2 and 9, and back in full swing on September 16.

If you’ve struggled to keep your momentum going at TM, this is the perfect time to get your (speech) ball rollin’ again. Now that you have a couple of Wednesdays to spare, here are 4 ways to re-charge, re-strategize, and turn your plans into action:

1. Brainstorm speech ideas. What happened over the summer? What did you see, do, and learn? We’re sure July and August were packed with juicy themes for you to share.

2. Make a list of what you’d like to improve. Review your past speech evaluations and notice what others consistently suggested you might want to work on. Choose one or two areas to improve and set your intentions for your next speech.

3. Do the work. Nip procrastination in the bud and start writing your next speech. Nothing to do on a Wednesday night? There’s never been a better time to put pen to paper (or hand to keyboard).

4. Set the date. If you’re finding tip #3 hard to do, just book your next speech. Remember: the only difference between a goal and a dream is a deadline.

As William Butler Yeats advised, “Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking.”

See you on the 16th!

Impossible — August 26 Meeting Recap

Have you ever believed you could accomplish something only to realize maybe it can’t be done?

If you answered yes to the above, James‘ Toastmaster speech was for you. Not only did he make us all believe ANYTHING is possible, his animated and heartfelt speech left everyone talking and thinking after the meeting. Mark reminded us that Toronto is indeed an awesome and unique place to live, offering us three great places to enjoy this summer with his speech titled “Oh Canada.”

Atif continued Mark’s theme of exploration with his speech about his backpacking adventures through 1st and 3rd world countries — which included living in India for $20 a day. Finally, James led a tightly-orchestrated Table Topics in which he proved that it’s possible for everyone to participate not once, but twice!

*PLEASE NOTE: There will be no meeting on Sep. 2 and Sep. 9. We’ll kick off the fall on Sep. 16. Come out and join us!

Ontario… yours to discover! — August 19 Meeting Recap

Are you looking to squeeze the most out of summer, but your wallet won’t take you very far?

No problem. Rose shared the perfect solution to finding a low-cost experience with her speech about her ideal Ontario “staycation.” John K. addressed another common challenge by sharing his tried and proven system of turning your overflowing email inbox into an organized and stress-free “Un-box.”

Alex answered the question we’ve all had at one point or another — how does a simple cell phone conversation turn into a bill at the end of the month? — while Table Topics proved that Ontario is indeed a great place to discover, based on the many “staycation” testimonials shared by LVTM members and guests.

*PLEASE NOTE: Next week (Aug. 26) will be our last meeting of the summer. Come out and join us! We’ll kick off again on Sept. 16.
