Message in a bottle from John: Good-bye, but keep in touch!

With the beginning of the New Year, one of our strongest mentors and dearest friends has decided to start a new professional journey in the U.S. John has had an impressive Toastmasters career, leading our club as both VP of Education and President. John is well-known for his impeccable work ethic and perseverance, which inspired many of us to challenge ourselves and stretch our boundaries! Here is John’s good-bye message:

Dear fellow Liberty Village Toastmasters,

For those of you who I haven’t had time to update personally, I recently received an exciting opportunity to take a position with a biotech company in Cincinnati, Ohio. The catch was I had to move quickly to take advantage of the offer. I have now relocated to the U.S. and I’m getting acclimatized to the company and the country as quickly as I can. I am excited to be working in my preferred field with such an excellent company, but saddened at the fact of leaving so many good friends behind in Toronto. Moments like this are often bittersweet.

I will miss our meetings, our member’s speeches, and of course the excellent camaraderie I was fortunate to be able to share with you during my time at Liberty Village. I will be back in Toronto from time to time, and will do my best to drop in on meetings (or the pub!) when I can. In the interim, I would invite all members to connect with me on LinkedIn, Facebook or contact me via email. I will be happy to hear from you, and will continue to assist you in any way I can. You have only to ask. Naturally, I wish you all the best as Toastmasters and friends, and trust you will continue with your Toastmasters journey at Liberty Village. You couldn’t belong to a better club!

Sincerely,

John

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – Feb. 23

Hello Liberty Village Toastmasters,

What an inspiring Club Speech contest we had!

Our target Speaker – Nick from the Beaches Speeches club gave us an excellent education on our internet usage and how to be more mindful of the amount of data we transfer.

Our two Evaluation contest participants Ian and Cleaver did an amazing job critiquing our guest Nick and offering useful insights.

Next, our two speech contestants inspired the audience with two very dramatic speeches.

Eric delivered a speech from the movie Network. The scene entitled “Corporate Cosmology” had him playing as Mr. Jenkins, and Julian helped out as Mr. Beale.

John had us ready for battle! His inspiring speech described in vivid detail what it means to be a fighter in his self-composed speech inspired by Alexander the Great.

Cleaver won the evaluation contest and John won the speech contest. They will go on to compete at the Area level contests.

Our area level contest will be held on Tuesday March 15th 6pm at Metro Hall’s Toronto Go-Getters location: 55 John St south east corner of king/john. 3rd floor room 310.

Please mark this day on your calendar and come out and support our members as they compete for the Area Level International Speech and Evaluation contests. Let’s show the World that Liberty Village is the best Toastmaster’s club!

Sincerely,

Your President,

Eric

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – February 16

girl crossing her armsWe kicked off the February 16 Toastmaster meeting by inducting six new members – a club first! Welcome Rolando, Michael, Keith, Tonia, Ali and Francisco!

Toastmaster Simon seamlessly bridged the evening’s theme of body language nicely with last week’s pronunciation theme. He also demonstrated why we should project positive body language.

Keith was the first of three featured speakers. His speech was from “Competent Communication Manual number 4”. Titled “If I had 87 billion dollars”, Keith explained the electricity economic crisis faced by the Ontario government. The topic really piqued our attention and Keith’s delivery was really good and natural.

The next speaker Hazel got immediate attention by offering chocolates to the group and directly got to the point of “Competent Communication Manual 3” by announcing “Valentine’s Day, It’s Here to Stay”. Point well taken!

Finally Vivienne presented her speech from “Competent Manual 4” by explaining how her six year brother allows her to see the world through his eyes. The speech titled “The Trials and Tribulation of a 6 year-old” showcased Vivienne’s talent of using a conversational tone in her speech.

Our Table Topics winner was Julian, who told us what he looks for in friends. Well done for a second Table Topics win in a row!

The Liberty Village club level speech and evaluation contest will take place instead of the regularly scheduled format of our meetings on February 23. Looking forward to seeing you there! Check out our website for further details!

Join us for our Feb. 16 meeting: “Your Body Speaks – What’s it Saying?”

Continuing in the theme begun at our last meeting, this Wednesday will feature another “back to basics” lesson in communication. While last week touched upon the importance of pronunciation, this week we’ll focus on the fundamentals of body language.

Join us at this week’s Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting this Wednesday, Feb. 16 at the Harbourfront Community Centre, Assembly Room C. Our Toastmaster for the night, Simon, will emphasize the core communication concept of body language as he talks about the meeting’s theme: “Your Body Speaks – What’s it Saying?”. It’s not something we’re all conscious of, but body language plays a vital role in the overall message we convey.

We also have a great line-up of speakers for the evening. Keith has been building lots of buzz for his long-awaited second speech, which will finally have its premier on Wednesday night. Hazel will continue her steady progress as a public speaker with her third speech – Get to the Point. Finally, Vivienne will use the power of words to vividly describe “The Trials and Tribulations of a 6-year-old”.

Make sure you come out – it’s shaping up to be a great evening.

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – February 9

Andreea was the toastmaster at our February 9 meeting. The importance of pronunciation was the theme of the evening. As toastmasters it’s paramount that people understand what we’re saying, so Andreea suggested the technique of saying tongue twisters to reduce this obstacle. Before people presented their toastmaster roles, they loosen their tongues by selecting a tongue twister from a plate and read it to the audience. It was fun watching people say some challenging tongue twisters!

Although three speeches were scheduled for the evening, we only heard one speech from Bill. It was still beneficial for all in attendance. Bill got the opportunity to have his speech evaluated by three people – the evaluator who was assigned to evaluate his speech and two other evaluators who were assigned to evaluate the cancelled speeches. Toastmaster evaluation contests follow this format, and it felt like a prelude to the annual speech evaluation contest, which will take place later this month. We had a lot of new faces in the audience and it was a great way to acquaint them with the annual evaluation contest.

Billdid an exceptional job presenting speech number 4 – “How to Say it”. It was titled “Another Day in Paradise”. He gave an exceptionally vivid account of an episode he experienced racing his bike. It was also really insightful listening to three different evaluations. At the end of the night we also voted for the best evaluation. Congratulations to Dennis who was voted the winner.

Table Topics continued on the theme of pronunciation. Each Table Topics participant was asked their perspective on a topic that featured a mispronounced word. This exercise not only required people to think on their feet, but they also had to pronounce the mispronounced word properly too.

Congratulations to Julian who consistently does an impeccable job pronouncing all his words well. Not only did he pronounce “Australia” properly, he clearly articulated a compelling argument why Australia’s currency will remain strong. Well done! It was also impressive to see new faces volunteer to participate in Table Topics. Your enthusiasm is what makes Table Topics a well loved part of the meeting.
