Message in a bottle from Jay: My visit to Kunwalia Public School

Our fellow friend and Advanced Speaker, Jay, has been travelling around the world to spread his wisdom. While in India, Jay was offered the opportunity to be a chief guest and speaker on the Republic Day at the school of his father’s village. This proved to be an exhilarating experience which inspired not only the students but also Jay, who discovered more about himself.

Here is the inspirational speech delivered by Jay:

“Hello students! It is such a beautiful day today. Not only is the sun shining and sky clear, but it is also Republic Day in our country and what a great country our India is. And what a great place our school is? A place where we meet every day, get to see our friends and learn new things. I am very happy to learn that you now have two brand new computers and will soon have the Internet. This is such great thing because you see any question you have, you can learn the answer on the Internet. Whether you want to know the height of Mt. Everest, or the distance to the moon – the answer, my friends, is on the Internet. With the computers, you will now be able to communicate with people all over the world. You can see what is happening in other countries and what other people’s lives are like. Make sure you take advantage of these new computers and learn how to use them as best as you can. Computers have already changed the world and they will become a big part of your lives.

Another thing that you need to learn is English. English is like a key – a key to the world. With this language the whole world will open up to you because it is the language of the world. If you go to France and you speak to a French person in Hindi, you both won’t be able to understand each other. But most likely there will be people who speak English. Knowing English will allow you to travel, work and live in any country in the world. So make sure you learn English, it’s your key to the world.

The last thing I want tell you all is to treat each other well. When someone treats you well, how nice does it feel? That’s how someone feels when you treat him or her well. Together we can do wonders, alone you can’t do anything. This also extends to animals. Treat them well too. These poor dogs and cats that run around on the streets, they are less fortunate than us. They also have lives. They also feel pain and hunger and fear. Who knows maybe we will come back as one of them in another life, then how would we feel if people treated us badly? I believe that God is watching over us and will make sure we get what we deserve for our behavior toward others.

So three things: learn how to use computers, learn English and treat others well. If you focus on these things, you will have a great life. And remember: work hard in school. The harder you work now, the easier your life will be. If you take it easy now, your life will be a very difficult one.

I have a few more minutes, so if you have any questions about me, Canada, or anything else – I’ll do my best to answer them in my funny-sounding Hindi.”

The students were too shy at first to ask me questions, so I asked some of them questions such as what they would like to be when they grow up and received mostly answers such as: teachers, doctors. After this I received many questions not only from them but from their teachers and other guests as well. The questions ranged from which crops grow in Canada, to what the temperature is like; to what kind of people live there.

“It was a wonderful experience to be able to say a few words of encouragement to these children and it was a great example of how Toastmasters skills are helpful in the real world.”

Message in a bottle from John: Good-bye, but keep in touch!

With the beginning of the New Year, one of our strongest mentors and dearest friends has decided to start a new professional journey in the U.S. John has had an impressive Toastmasters career, leading our club as both VP of Education and President. John is well-known for his impeccable work ethic and perseverance, which inspired many of us to challenge ourselves and stretch our boundaries! Here is John’s good-bye message:

Dear fellow Liberty Village Toastmasters,

For those of you who I haven’t had time to update personally, I recently received an exciting opportunity to take a position with a biotech company in Cincinnati, Ohio. The catch was I had to move quickly to take advantage of the offer. I have now relocated to the U.S. and I’m getting acclimatized to the company and the country as quickly as I can. I am excited to be working in my preferred field with such an excellent company, but saddened at the fact of leaving so many good friends behind in Toronto. Moments like this are often bittersweet.

I will miss our meetings, our member’s speeches, and of course the excellent camaraderie I was fortunate to be able to share with you during my time at Liberty Village. I will be back in Toronto from time to time, and will do my best to drop in on meetings (or the pub!) when I can. In the interim, I would invite all members to connect with me on LinkedIn, Facebook or contact me via email. I will be happy to hear from you, and will continue to assist you in any way I can. You have only to ask. Naturally, I wish you all the best as Toastmasters and friends, and trust you will continue with your Toastmasters journey at Liberty Village. You couldn’t belong to a better club!

Sincerely,

John

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – Feb. 23

Hello Liberty Village Toastmasters,

What an inspiring Club Speech contest we had!

Our target Speaker – Nick from the Beaches Speeches club gave us an excellent education on our internet usage and how to be more mindful of the amount of data we transfer.

Our two Evaluation contest participants Ian and Cleaver did an amazing job critiquing our guest Nick and offering useful insights.

Next, our two speech contestants inspired the audience with two very dramatic speeches.

Eric delivered a speech from the movie Network. The scene entitled “Corporate Cosmology” had him playing as Mr. Jenkins, and Julian helped out as Mr. Beale.

John had us ready for battle! His inspiring speech described in vivid detail what it means to be a fighter in his self-composed speech inspired by Alexander the Great.

Cleaver won the evaluation contest and John won the speech contest. They will go on to compete at the Area level contests.

Our area level contest will be held on Tuesday March 15th 6pm at Metro Hall’s Toronto Go-Getters location: 55 John St south east corner of king/john. 3rd floor room 310.

Please mark this day on your calendar and come out and support our members as they compete for the Area Level International Speech and Evaluation contests. Let’s show the World that Liberty Village is the best Toastmaster’s club!

Sincerely,

Your President,

Eric

Liberty Village Toastmasters meeting summary – February 16

girl crossing her armsWe kicked off the February 16 Toastmaster meeting by inducting six new members – a club first! Welcome Rolando, Michael, Keith, Tonia, Ali and Francisco!

Toastmaster Simon seamlessly bridged the evening’s theme of body language nicely with last week’s pronunciation theme. He also demonstrated why we should project positive body language.

Keith was the first of three featured speakers. His speech was from “Competent Communication Manual number 4”. Titled “If I had 87 billion dollars”, Keith explained the electricity economic crisis faced by the Ontario government. The topic really piqued our attention and Keith’s delivery was really good and natural.

The next speaker Hazel got immediate attention by offering chocolates to the group and directly got to the point of “Competent Communication Manual 3” by announcing “Valentine’s Day, It’s Here to Stay”. Point well taken!

Finally Vivienne presented her speech from “Competent Manual 4” by explaining how her six year brother allows her to see the world through his eyes. The speech titled “The Trials and Tribulation of a 6 year-old” showcased Vivienne’s talent of using a conversational tone in her speech.

Our Table Topics winner was Julian, who told us what he looks for in friends. Well done for a second Table Topics win in a row!

The Liberty Village club level speech and evaluation contest will take place instead of the regularly scheduled format of our meetings on February 23. Looking forward to seeing you there! Check out our website for further details!
